Why should I soften water?

Softened water saves you money. Lots of money. According to the US Dept. of Commerce, possibly over $1,000 per year. Certainly, hundreds of dollars each year and much more long term. So, you spend a little, but get a lot.

Water is sometimes referred to as the universal solvent, because it dissolves a little bit of everything it comes in contact with. When water is in the ground it is in close contact for long periods of time with many different minerals that are found in the earth. Some of the most common ones are calcium, magnesium, and iron. These are especially important to us because they are what makes our water "hard".

You can see the problems with hard water in your kitchen, bathroom, and laundry, but the hidden effects you can't see can be more problematic. Scale from hard water builds up in all your appliances that use water -- water heater, shower heads, dishwashers, coffee makers, and irons resulting in premature failure.

Scale forms even more rapidly when water is heated. Hardness minerals deposit on hot surfaces forming a rock hard coating that insulates the surface of heating elements causing early failure and a much greater operational cost. The Water Quality Association ,WQA, has calculated that it takes 21% - 29% more energy to run your wate heater with hard water (10gpg) than soft water.
